After seeing this cute idea to make a personalized plate for Santa’s cookies here and another simple tutorial on drawing on porcelain here, I decided we needed to give this a shot.
I whipped out my sharpie collection, a plain white plate my mom just happend to have lying around while we were up last weekend, and got to sketching…
It’s super simple to do and you probably already have most of what you need at your house. I decided to start by sketching my idea on the plate first with pencil because you can simply erase it with a wet paper towel if you mess up. If you plan to use a black permanent marker on your plate, this is a great starting point. If you’re not, like us – the marker may not cover up the pencil, so tracing isn’t really an option. I found this out pretty quickly and free-handed the final design.
Once you’re happy with what you’ve come up with, bake your plate at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. This should (key word: should) make the permanent marker “set” so you’re able to hand-wash your piece after use without any of your design wiping off. In our case, that didn’t happen – the marker seems to wipe off pretty easily. I was a bit bummed about it, but then I thought hey! now we can come up with a new, fun design every year so Santa has something to look forward to underneath all those delicious treats 😉 Amy, xo.
